I was reminded while shooting my video course of the risks of doing video to promote a course where you’re supposed to be the expert on video. But there’s no avoiding it. The only way to advertise a video course about video is video. You can see how I did here.
Back when How to Shoot Video that Doesn’t Suck was first published we had the same problem.
So here’s that one–and you know, not bad…

Steve – a friend at work had your book and I asked if I could see it. 3 pages in and I knew had to get my own copy! It just arrived yesterday, Even though I mainly shoot documentary style weddings and dance recitals, your advice has changed the way I approach almost everything! I can't wait for the next wedding in a few months to produce a great video. Thanks!
Thanks, Jeff! Glad the book worked for you!
Hello Steve,
I've been producing YouTube Videos on my Channel since 2006 and have over 100,000 subscribers. I picked up your book as a way to continue to expand my knowledge and improve, and I have to say your book is excllent. You hit so many great points in a very quick way. You write the book the same way you advocate filming and editing your video: in short interesting clips that get to the point fast and hit hard.
Thanks for your tips and I will be reading through this book more than once.

Thanks,Andrew– really appreciate the testimonial from a guy who seems to have his video game well in hand. Checked out your channel– stuff looks great!
Funny. Before I bought your book today or saw this trailer, I went with my family to the aquarium in Long Beach, where it seems you shot parts of this. I also took my Kodak camera (but the waterproof one that I wanted to test with the stingrays).
Anyway, I'm really enjoying the tips and the humorous style of writing. I'm a journalist and have been doing some video. I had done a lot of writing and photography, but my audience really likes the videos I've done so far and I need something to help me grow in it. I think this book will do me well.
Good eye recognizing the aquarium. Thanks for getting the book!
I just finished your book and I learned so much! It's very clear and easy to follow. I really appreciate it as an aspiring filmmaker. You give amazing advice and I know I'm going to think carefully before shooting my next video. I can't wait to read it all over again!
Thanks, Holly! Feel free to post questions in the question box if the need arises!
Steve, I just bought your book. I'm trying to put together an idea about a series of instructional online videos on a specific subject. I have zero interest in general movie-making, so I've never shot any video before.
Your book is laugh-out-loud funny, and the jokes punctuate the advice in a way that makes it unforgettable (I will never edit a video without thinking about that 2:46 movie that might have been a lot better at around 2:20).
Thanks a million, Steve, most especially on behalf of my students.
Steve – I just rec'd your book last night andthink it is great. Everything I've read so far makes absolute sense and I am happy to say I already do a few things mentioned in the book. Your tips are going to help tremendously not only with my video taping (of friends and family – I'm just an amateur) but also with the final editing – keeping it short has always been a challenge for me but, in the past, when I have, the video is always so much more compelling!
Thanks for a great book.
